The preparations for the shutdown of Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas continue and the doors will close on all inpatient, emergency and ambulatory services as of 9 P.M. this Friday, October 9. The Independence City Commission has appointed a Health Care Committee to work with Mercy Hospital to come up with a services proposal. Media spokesperson Joanne Smith said all are working on a smooth transition.

A press release on the city of Independence' website said that “although this option does not provide everything the community needs, it's the only viable option.” Independence residents will have to travel to Coffeyville or Bartlesville for their future medical needs.
