The confusion about two schools in the Bartlesville Public School District being put in “shelter in place mode” on Thursday has been explained by Bartlesville Police Captain Jay Hastings in a social media post. Hastings said “At no time was there an incident at the schools. There were no threats made against anyone at the schools.”

BPSD Community Relations Director Jamye Ryan explains the difference between a “lockdown” and a “shelter in place” order.

The “shelter in place” order was lifted after officers made contact with the family member in question. There are no reports of an arrest being made in the case. The complete explanation by Captain Hastings can be seen below:

Bartlesville Police Department Media release February 5, 2016

On February 4th, 2016 at 12:42 pm Bartlesville Police Officers responded to a threats complaint which occurred during a family fight. The threats complaint came in by a third party and Police were not able to immediately locate the parties directly involved.

Once Officers did locate one spouse there was a concern that the other spouse, who had left the area upset and allegedly intoxicated, may go to Kane elementary and Central Middle school to pick up the couple’s children. Officers on the call notified those two schools directly so they would be aware of the incident in case the other parent arrived at the school.

As a precaution the BPS placed those two schools in a “shelter in place mode” and sent out text alerts to parents. This prompted several calls from parents to the Police Department overloading the dispatch center asking if an incident had taken place at the school.

At no time was there an incident at the schools. There were no threats made against anyone at the schools. School resource Officers responded to Kane and Central where they remained the rest of the day. The other spouse of the family fight was located in Dewey Oklahoma around 3:00 pm and Officers checked their welfare at that time and they had calmed down.

Both the Police Department and Public School System communicate daily sharing any information which may cause a concern or lead to any incidents which may require extra security.

Captain Jay Hastings
