First District Congressman Jim Bridenstine says the U. S. Government needs to buy satellite data from commercial providers.  Bridenstine serves on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee.

He told a Bartlesville Chamber Eggs and Issues forum Tuesday morning that China recently shot down one of its own satellites.  China showed the world that every country's communications and GPS satellites were vulnerable to attack.

Bridenstine says our military satellites pass higher quality imaging and other services and are secure because the government is the only user, but there are relatively few government satellites.  Bridenstine says the military started buying data on satellites when we started the Iraq war in after 9/11.  Since then, the satellite diversity has made government communications and weather data less of a target for attack by other powers.

Bridenstine says other congressmen are hesitant to use services such as Google Earth as a backup but government programs are more subject to legislative and contracting delays.
