A fatal accident involving a pickup and a semi closed a portion of U.S. 169 a mile and a half north of Talala for about four hours Thursday morning.

The driver of the pickup has been identified as 48 year-old Giles Chism Vaughn, Jr. of Nowata.  Vaughn reportedly died just after 7 o'clock in the morning at the scene as a result of head, neck, and internal injuries despite treatment by Oologah-Talala Emergency Medical Service Paramedics.

Nowata Ambulance transported driver of semi to Jane Phillips Nowata Health Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The accident location is 3-4 miles south of the Nowata-Rogers County line.  The crash happened at about 6:40 about one-and-a-half miles north of Talala.

Troopers said Vaughan's pickup collided with a semi and the semi then rolled over, blocking both the lanes of the highway.  Vaughan was reportedly southbound and according to witnesses, crossed the center line and the northbound lane.  The driver of the semi swerved onto the shoulder to try to avoid a collision and the truck collided with the rear wheels of the semi's trailer.  The semi was pulling a flatbed trailer which was loaded with lumber and the crash scattered it across the highway.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the mishap.
