Bartlesville's defensive stands late in the fourth quarter handed the Bruins a win during their opening game of the 2016 football season on Friday.

BHS beat McAlester 27-24 at Custer Stadium. Bartlesville is 1-0 to begin the year.

The Bruin defense held on fourth down on two separate occasions late in the game to keep a three-point lead and earn the win. Bartlesville had led 27-10 early in the third quarter before McAlester scored two unanswered touchdowns, but the Buffaloes couldn't get a third.

Three touchdown grabs from AJ Archambo and a huge 51-yard touchdown run from quarterback Garrett Meidl as time expired before halftime were the only scores for BHS on the night.

Had it not been for a few key false start and holding penalties Bartlesville may have won by multiple scores.

McAlester returns the bulk of its starters from a 2015 team that won 10 games and challenged for the 5A state title.

Bartlesville's tough non-district schedule continues on Friday at Owasso.

It will be a 7:30 kickoff on KWON - AM 1400 and FM 93.3.

Highlights:

10-yard TD Pass Meidl to Archambo

18-yard TD Pass Meidl to Archambo

51-yard TD Run from Garrett Meidl

61-yard TD Pass Meidl to Archambo
