District Attorney Asks Nowata Voters to Say "NO"

District Attorney Kevin Buchanan and Nowata County Sheriff Sandy Hadley are asking Nowata County voters to reject a sales tax vote next month.  Buchanan is circulating a letter explaining why they want a “no” vote.

The D-A’s letter asks voters to decide if having patrol deputies in Nowata County is important to them.  Buchanan says county commissioners have asked for tax money for road funds that they control and simply meet the constitutional requirement to fund the jail but provide little or no money for deputies to patrol the county or respond to emergency calls.

According to the letter the use of sales taxes to partially fund the sheriff’s office is practiced in many counties in the state.  It says the sales tax proposal is critical because once it is passed it can’t be changed for years and no additional proposals can be brought forward for consideration.

We have a copy of the district attorney’s letter to the citizens of Nowata County.
