Both the Bartlesville High girls and boys basketball teams played close games on Tuesday night in an impromptu double-header against one of the Bruins rivals in Ponca City.

The twin bill did not disappoint.

The BHS girls ended up losing a tough one.

Ponca topped Bartlesville 42-39. The Lady Bruins led throughout the contest, put the Lady Cats controlled most of the fourth quarter. Bartlesville was led in scoring by Kate Gronigan and Kaelynn Duncan, who both had eight.

The guy’s game was a thriller, and a freshman was once again the big story.

Bartlesville came from behind multiple times to beat Ponca 74-66 behind a 43-point effort from David Castillo.

He had 21 at halftime then scored 22 more in the second half. Castillo was instrumental when the Bruins would trail BHS had separate seven and eight point deficits, but each time he had an answer.

Bartlesville would get a huge three from Aadhi Ayyapan when the Bruins were down by one in the final couple minutes. It was another Castillo and-one as the second were dwindling with BHS up four that ended up sealing the game for the Bruins.

Castillo ended up going 15-20 at the foul line. After the game the freshman says that Bartlesville stuck together when its back was against the wall.

Bartlesville girls are 2-10. The Bruin guys are 4-8.

Both those clubs are in the Oklahoma City metro area for tournament play beginning on Thursday.

The Bruin guys are in the Bruce Gray Invitational and will face Heritage Hall Thursday afternoon at 2:00. We will have coverage on KWON - AM 1400 and FM 93.3.
