Second District Sees Contested Primary
First-term Republican U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin is facing a challenge in next week's primary election from a professional bass fisherman who claims Mullin has not been conservative enough.
Republican Darrel Robertson says Mullin was swept into office in 2012 thanks in part to a wave of support from the tea party, but seemed to shy away from that support once he got to Washington.
Mullin, who owns a plumbing business, disagreed with Robertson's assertion, and restated his conservative credentials: he's a pro-life, pro-gun candidate who "believes in the U.S. Constitution."
Two Democrats and an independent have also filed to run in the district, which stretches across 26 eastern Oklahoma counties and is home to thousands of conservative-leaning Democrats.
