Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Phillips Petroleumm, C. J. "Pete" Silas of Bartlesville died Tuesday, December 16th.  Mr. Silas was well known in the community and was deeply involved with many of its organizations. 

As a businessman, Silas and his wife, Theodosa "Theo" Silas arrived in Bartlesville in 1977 with their four children.  He rose to chairman and CEO of the company in 1985 and helped guide the company through the aftermath of hostile takeover attempts.  The Bartlesville Community Foundation honored the Silas family in 2013 through its Legacy Hall of Fame.


He has served as chairman of the board of National Junior Achievement.  Mr. Silas was also named a life member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America's Board of Governors after serving as its national chairman.  He was also involved in sports throughout his life.  While he was in the army he played on the team that won the 1955 Pan American games and was a member of the Phillips 66ers basketball team.

He and his wife helped found Bartlesville's OK Mozart Festival and he served as the chairman, trustee, and chief fundraiser for the Price Tower Arts complex.

Memorial services for Mr. Silas will be this Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the First Presbyterian Church in Bartlesville.  Services are under the direction of the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home in Bartlesville.
