District Attorney for Osage County, Rex Duncan and former Assistant District Attorney Keith Simms attended a clemency hearing held by the Parole and Pardon Board in Oklahoma City last Friday. The hearing was held to determine clemency regarding John Mason Grant. In 1998 John Grant murdered Department Of Corrections cafeteria worker, Gay Carter. Former District Attorney Keith Simms prosecuted the case and the jury recommended the death penalty. The case has moved along the process of clemency hearings through the past years. The Board on Friday voted 5 to 0 to deny clemency and to proceed with execution.  The recommendation now goes to the Governor for approval.  Execution for John Mason Grant is now set for February 19th. The significance of this case is the first recommended and known death penalty in Osage County.
