The filing period is underway for candidates running for the top job in the Cherokee Nation. One candidate, Charlie Soap, is the widower of the first woman to serve as principal chief, the late Wilma Mankiller. Mankiller was reportedly the most influential American Indian leader in recent history and she is credited with accomplishing many things during her 10 years a principal chief. Soap is hoping that his relationship with Mankiller will bring out the votes in his favor. Other candidates include former chief Chad Smith and current chief Bill John Baker.  The filing period ends Thursday, March 5th. The election takes place on June 27th.
