The Oklahoma Water Resources Board awarded the Copan Public Works Authority a $99,990 Rural Economic Action Plan (REAP) grant to improve the community’s wastewater infrastructure.

The Authority’s wastewater system includes a flow-through lagoon system, and a collection system consisting of 6 and 8-inch lines. The original lagoon system was built in the late 1970’s.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers relocated the lagoon in the 1980’s to make way for the construction of Copan Lake. The lagoons are in need of improvement and the proposed project consists of rehabilitating the affected areas and installing riprap.

Chief of the OWRB's Financial Assistance Division, Joe Freeman calculated that the grant will save the Copan’s customers $179,982in principal and interest charges, by not having to borrow the project funds.

The OWRB approved the grant during the agency’s monthly board meeting on May 19.
