The appropriation for education by the State Legislature for fiscal year 2016 was approved Thursday night by the Oklahoma State Board of Education. The $2.5 billion budget is the same amount as last year's funding. A major portion of the money, $1.9 billion, will be distributed to the state school districts through the state funding formula. The next largest amount, $416 million, will fund the Flexible Benefit Allowance. Funding for instructional materials, including textbooks, totals $33 million with another $22 million being used for administrative and support functions, which include employee salaries. Also on Thursday, the Board approved around $6 million in grants for 18 education programs.
