Bartlesville Beats Bixby

Coming off losses to Sand Springs on Tuesday, both Bartlesville basketball teams bounced back on Friday night at Bruin Fieldhouse, completing a sweep over Bixby in Frontier Conference play.

The Lady Bruins started off with a 52-49 win in game one. The girls led almost wire-to-wire. In fact, the game wasn't quite as close as the score would indicate. Bartlesville (6-5) took double-digit leads at many times in the second half, but couldn't quite put the Lady Spartans away. The Lady Bruins took a seven-point lead into halftime, and into the fourth quarter.

It was a balanced night scoring for BHS, which was good news. Hailey Tucker had scored all of Bartlesville's first half points against Sand Springs, but she didn't need to on Friday. Good production from Erin Henry, who scored 12 in her first start, and Rachel Behar, provided a bit of relief. Gabby Culver also added in eight.

Tucker still finished with 19 points, but it was far more efficient. Tucker posted up early and often against Bixby, drawing fouls and scoring down low.

A BHS press, and 1-2-1 zone spelled trouble for Bixby (7-8), as well.

On the boys side, it was the usual formula for Clent Stewart's club. Grind out a victory. BHS won over the Spartans 40-25.

Bartlesville (6-5) survived a first half where it only scored 14 points with defense. The Bruins allowed only seven points in the first half to Bixby (4-8), by far the lowest output of the season for the Spartans.

Antonio Castillo was also held scoreless in the first half for BHS, a stat that would usually spell disaster. Despite all that, the game was never in question. BHS cruised to a double-digit lead early in the third quarter and never looked back. The closest the Spartans got was nine. But a 5-0 run from BHS toward the end of the third quarter sealed the deal.

AJ Parker had all nine of Bartlesville's points in the first quarter, off three three-pointers. Parker added another three before the game was over, and finished with 12 points. Castillo added in 10 points in the second half, and it was another low-scoring win for Bartlesville.

Both teams will host Sapulpa on Tueday, Jan. 21 at Bruin Fieldhouse, you can hear those games on KWON 1400 AM, 93.3 FM. Pregame at 5:45, girls at 6:00, boys around 7:30.
