Bartlesville Girls Swim Team Takes State

For the second time this year, a Bartlesville girl's team full of freshmen has won a 6A title. The BHS girl's swimming team won the 6A State Championship on Saturday at Edmond Sante Fe High School.

The Lady Bruins entered the state meet with only eight players, six of which were freshman. Those numbers were far less than some of the bigger teams from the west. In fact, Bartlesville had only taken second at the 6A east regional a couple of weeks ago.

The BHS girls were led by tremendous relay performances. Bartlesville beat state records in the 200-yard medley and the 200 relay freestyle. Both Katie Steward and Hailey Downey beat the previous 100 backstroke record. Bartlesville went on to win the 400 freestyle relay, as well.

The title marks the second state championship this year for BHS. The Bartlesville cross country girls team won a state championship in the fall of 2014. That title was the first for the Bruins or Lady Bruins since 1997.

The boy's team didn't do too shabby, either. The Bruins finished second behind Norman North. Thomas Downey and Aaron Stanek both won Gold Medals at the event.

Keep it tuned to BartlesvilleRadio.com for interviews with the state champions and runners-up, along with head coach Chad Englehart, as Bartlesville celebrates its second state title this academic year.

Here is the full preview of the state meet with Englehart from last week.
