Barltesville might have a seat at the table as one of the most historic baseball towns in the Midwest.

A notable baseball historian made his way to Bartlesville on Sunday afternoon. Phil Dixon, an author from Kansas City who is widely regarded as one of the nation’s best experts on baseball history, gave a presentation at the Bartlesville Public Library. Dixon focused on the Negro League baseball in the early 1900s and more specifically, the Negro League's history in Bartlesville.

Before baseball was integrated in 1947, some of the country’s best players played with the Kansas City Monarchs, who traveled across the United States on barnstorming tours. The Monarch’s came through Bartlesville many times in those early years. Dixon talks about Bartlesville’s place in baseball history.

Dixon said that the Kansas City Monarchs came through Bartlesville most years starting in the 1920s. Most games were played at now Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium after its completion in 1932.

According to Dixon, Satchel Page’s appearance in Bartlesville came in 1945, when the Bartlesville Blues took on the Coffeyville All-Stars.
