Bruins Win Battle Over Sapulpa

It wasn't a work of art, but Bartlesville High finally got back in the win column on Friday night at Custer Stadium.

BHS won a back and forth affair, 9-2, over Sapulpa to improve to 2-5 on the season.

A Cole Williams interception with 1:11 remaining sealed the win for BHS, it was technically the first win on the field for the Bruins. It was the first time Bartlesville has had the lead at the end of a game since Zero Week against McAlester.

Bartlesville scored on a 27-yard Taton Hopkins field goal and on a four-yard DeAndre Young rushing touchdown for its nine points.

The Bruins trailed 2-0 after a bad snap on a punt went out of the back of the Bruins end zone for a safety with 5:00 in the first quarter.

BHS got the Hopkins field goal with 11 minutes left in the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead. That would be all Bartlesville would need, as the Bruin defense pitched a shutout. It is the second game in a row that the BHS defense has taken center stage. Bartlesville forced three turnovers on the night.

Just before halftime a fumbled handoff exchange from the Chieftains inside their own five-yard line gave the Bruins the ball first and goal. Young scampered in the end zone to give BHS the 9-2 lead and the eventual winning margin.

A special note as well, Bruin punter Andrew Hardin had two punts of more than 55-yards. Hardin's 58 yard punt that pinned Sapulpa deep in its own territory ended up leading to the Chieftain fumble - that led to the only touchdown in the game.

BHS is next at home against Bixby on Thursday.
