The Cherokee Nation donated $2,000 to the 2A state champion Oklahoma Union Cougars boys’ basketball during a ceremony on Thursday morning.

District 12 Cherokee Councilor Dora Smith-Patzkowski and District 11 Cherokee Councilor Victoria Mitchell Vazquez each donated $1,000 to help the team purchase state championship rings. 70% of the roster is of Cherokee heritage.

OKU defeated Howe on March 13 to win the school’s first ever boys’ basketball state title. Smith-Patzkowski says the Cherokee Nation is proud of the team.

The Cherokee council reached out to OKU athletic director Brad Hall, who was also an assistant coach on the basketball team.

OKU has also raised over $5,500 through an apparel fundraiser with Designs Unlimited in Coffeyville. The Cougars are close to securing enough funding for state championship rings for the entire team. Those looking to support the team in its fundraising efforts for state rings can make a donation to the school.

Smith-Patzkowski also wanted to congratulate Jace Hollingshed who was named to 2021 Oklahoma Native All-State team. Head coach Lee Ott will coach a team in the Native All-Star game in Okmulgee on June 12.
