Dewey Public Schools took action on finding its next high school varsity girls’ basketball coach at its school board meeting on Monday night, a handful of days after the resignation of former head coach David Vann.

Dewey hired Paul McCann, who will serve as a middle school teacher and head girls’ basketball coach.

McCann comes from Muskogee, but also served some time overseas with both women’s and men’s hoops. Dewey Superintendent Vince Vincent talks about some of McCann’s experience.

McCann’s initial contract will be on a temporary basis. Vincent says that all new hires can be on a temporary contract for the first four semesters to make sure there is a good fit.

Vincent says he thinks that McCann will bring the right mix of talent and experience to help Dewey basketball on several levels.

McCann is the third Dewey girls coach in the past four seasons. The previous two of Earnest Jones and Vann had resigned after two seasons or less
