Dewey Sweeps Nowata

Round one of the Dewey-Nowata basketball series  went to both the Lady Doggers and Doggers Friday night as they swept Nowata.  Lady Doggers won 65-60 while the Doggers won 68-53.

The girls game was a physical, hard-fought contest for both teams.  A lot of fouls were called that both teams attempted 76 free throws.  Dewey went 17 for 43 while Nowata went 19 for 33.  Nowata kept the game close, but Dewey led throughout and improved to 2-1 overall while Nowata fell to 0-2.  Dewey's Emma Tillman came off the bench, made five 3-pointers, and led with 20 points.  Kiersten Vincent finished with 15 points while Karissa Jones added 11.

Just like the girls game, the boys game was more intense.  Very physical and both teams fought hard.  Nowata led early 14-10 after the first period, only allowing the Doggers to make one field goal.  After that, Dewey went on a 21-15 run in the second period and took a 31-29 halftime lead.  Dewey led throughout the second half and improved their record to 2-1 overall while Nowata fell to 1-1.  A lot of fouls were called as 67 free throws were attempted between both squads.  Dewey went 32 for 43 while Nowata went 16 for 24.  Trenton Anderson led Dewey with 18 points while Hunter Hines added 17.  Drew Miller finished with 15 points while Tyren Ricks added 11.  Nowata had three players scoring in double figures.  Zen Callahan led with 17 points while Michael Velasco added 11 and Dalton Carter finished with 10 points.

Dewey will play in the Adair Tournament beginning on Monday.  Both Lady Doggers and Doggers will face Jay in the first round on Monday.  Girls play at 4:30 P.M. while the boys play at 6.

Nowata will play in their own tournament beginning on Tuesday.  Lady Ironmen will take on county rival Oklahoma Union at 7 P.M. while the Ironmen will play Chelsea at 8:30 P.M.
