Elementary Schoolers Run Bruin Mile

There will be some introductions into running that may last a lifetime on Thursday afternoon in Sooner Park.

The Bartlesville High School Cross Country teams are organizing the Bruin Mile. Third, fourth and fifth graders from Bartlesville will run a mile course led by the cross country runners. BHS head coach David Ayers explains the event. BHS cross country coordinates with PE teachers in elementary schools for the event. The children have been building up to the mile in their courses.

The course is the same that the high school team trains on throughout the year, and that the junior high school cross country teams run on throughout the year.

Around 400 children will run the race, with nearly 600 spectators, meaning about 1,000 people will pack into Sooner Park for the event.

The winning time will most likely be between 6:00 and 7:00 minutes from a fifth grade boy.

The majority of varsity runners competed in the Bruin Mile. Ayers says this can make lifelong runners out of the elementary students. It can also be a solid recruiting tool.
