Nowata edged past Dewey 68-59 in the first edition of the area’s best rivalry on Friday night. The Ironmen showed dominance from outside the arch and limited the Doggers perimeter game as well. Nowata went on an 8-0 run to push its lead to 22-11 by the end of the first quarter.

The Doggers kept up for the rest of the first half as the score was 38-29 at the break. Mark Price and Gabe Velasco carried the Ironmen’s first half efforts. On the other side Colby Henley was the only one Nowata couldn’t stop.

Scoring picked up in the third quarter. Nowata stretched its lead back to double-figures thanks to three-pointers on three consecutive possessions from Mark Price. Price finished with a team-high 23 points. Nowata stole just about all the momentum on the final play of the third period as Trenton Smith beat the buzzer with one of his four three-pointers on the night.

The Doggers stuck around in the final quarter thanks to the efforts of Hayden Thornton. Thornton was a force inside as he finished 23 points 12 rebounds on the night. Thornton also got the crowd going with this fastbreak dunk.

The Doggers reduced the deficit to seven points but couldn’t get it lower than that. Dewey drops its season opener while Nowata moves to 2-0. Both teams will be in tournament action next week.
