Nowata football has tabbed Graham Snelding as its new head coach. Snelding is a 20-year coaching veteran that most recently held the head coaching job at Newkirk High School. Snelding becomes the fifth Nowata football coach to be hired over the last five seasons. Former Ironmen head coach Chris Messner announced he will be joining the staff at Oologah.

Snelding grew up in Shidler, Oklahoma. He has coached football in New Jersey, Kansas, Florida, Texas and Oklahoma. He has previous head coaching experience at Pawhuska and Blackwell as far regionals teams are concerned. Snelding has always admired the toughness of Nowata teams from afar.

Snelding took over at Newkirk after the Tigers won five games over the course of three seasons from 2015-2017. Newkirk then went 6-5 and appeared in the 2A playoffs in Snelding’s first season at the helm. The Tigers went 2-8 in his second season in 2019. Snelding says he has taken over several different programs that have been in similar situations.

The new hiring still will need to be approved by the Nowata Public Schools Board of Education. Snelding has already put in his resignation at Newkirk. We will have more information on Snelding’s hiring at Nowata in the days to come.
