Nowata Falls To Verdigris In Regional Finals

The 19th ranked Nowata Ironmen played their hearts out Saturday night at Verdigris, but came up short in overtime as the third ranked Cardinals won 78-76 to claim the Class 3A Regional Championship.

The game went back and forth as both teams took shots at each other.   Nowata led 65-58 with about three minutes left in regulation when Verdigris went on a 7-0 run to send the game into overtime.  The Ironmen had a shot to win with 2.7 seconds left in overtime, but a Jacob Barnes lengh of the court pass went off of Cody Smith out of bounds that gave the Cardinals possession and the win.  Michael Velasco led Nowata with 25 points and made four 3-pointers.  Cody Smith finished with 16 points and made four 3-pointers.  Zen Callahan finished with 13 points and Jaden Gilliland added 11 points.  As a team, Nowata made 13 three-pointers.  Cardinals Brewster Peacock led with a game high 28 points.

Verdigris will face Lincoln Christian in the Area Finals Friday night at 8 at Cleveland.  Meanwhile, Nowata will also head to the Area Tournament next week as they will have to win three straight to qualify in the state tournament.  The Ironmen will take on Adair Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Cleveland.
