OKWU Fall To St. Mary's

It was a tough Wednesday night for both Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles and Lady Eagles basketball teams at Leavenworth, Kansas as the University of St. Mary swept OKWU.  Lady Eagles lost 64-62 while the Eagles lost 88-80.

Lady Eagles played their best in the 4th quarter, outscoring the Spires 24-17.  St. Mary's Candy De Los Reyes made a layup with nine seconds left to give the Spires a 64-62 lead.  Lady Eagles had a shot to go into overtime, but Tiffany Rieger's five-footer was short and the Lady Eagles lost their third straight game.  Rieger finished with 17 points while Shelbie Kirby led the Lady Eagles with 22 points.  OKWU shot 34 percent from the field.  The story of the game was free throw attempts.  St. Mary's attempted 36 free throws while OKWU attempted 20.  Lady Eagles drop to 9-11 overall and 5-7 in KCAC play.

In the mens game, the Eagles were hot from the field, shooting 50 percent, and ended the contest shooting 45 percent.  Eagles led 39-38 at halftime, but were outscored 50-41 in the second half to fall by eight points.  Five OKWU players finished in double figures.  Breiman Alexander led with 20 points while Elbert Lawrence finished with 15 points.  Shaq Martin had a solid game as he finished with 11 points and nine rebounds while Pat Everett added 10 points and nine rebounds.  AJ Jack had a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.  St. Mary's Grant Greenburg led with 33 points. The Spires shot 50 percent from the field.  Eagles have lost four straight, dropping their record to 7-12 overall and 4-8 in KCAC play.

Next up for the Eagles and Lady Eagles will be this Saturday afternoon as they will host McPherson College.  Ladies play at 3 while the Men will play at 5.  You can hear the men's game on Sports Talk 99.1 FM KPGM starting at 4:45.
