An Oklahoma Wesleyan alum is making huge foray into the world of professional basketball. Austin Johnson, 2008 OKWU graduate, was announced as a member of the San Antonio Spurs staff in the NBA Summer League. Johnson will serve as guest coach on the San Antonio staff.

The Spurs squad of primarily rookies and those with little-to-no NBA experience will play five games between July 7 and July 15th in Las Vegas. The biggest name that Johnson will help coach is San Antonio’s first round pick Jeremy Sochan, who was born in Guymon, Oklahoma and played at Baylor.

Johnson still serves as the head coach of Lewis-Clark State (ID). His team defeated his alma mater in the Sweet 16 of the 2021 NAIA national tournament. LSC would finish as the national runner up under Johnson’s leadership.

Johnson was the Eagles scoring leader in 2007 under head coach Donnie Bostwick and then was the starting point guard on the 2008 OKWU team that went to the national quarterfinals. Johnson graduated one year prior to the Eagles winning the school’s only national championship in 2009.
