Oologah Looks to Restore Winning Ways
The start of high school football practices is nearing closer as practices can begin statewide on Monday. Today our preview takes us down US-169 to Oologah-Talala High School. The Mustangs have a rich heritage of football in recent years but fell on hard times in 2018. Oologah played in the 4A state title game every year from 2015-2017, losing to rival Wagoner each year.
Oologah went through a coaching change after just one game last year as Chad Weeks was promoted to from offensive coordinator to head coach. The Mustangs went 5-5 in the regular season and lost to Poteau in the first round of the 4A playoffs. The lone bright spot in 2018 was an overtime upset victory over Wagoner ending a 14-game losing streak.
Junior Blake Salt will play quarterback once again. Expect a heavy dose of senior running back Zac Wright as well as the Mustangs offense could be run-focused in 2019. In 2018 the Mustangs offense kicked into gear in the second half of the season. Oologah averaged just over 30 point per game while going 4-1 to end the regular season.
The Mustangs open with a zero week contest against Fort Gibson on August 30.
