Three local teams were eliminated Thursday during area tournament action from Fort Gibson. Pawhuska, the Oklahoma Union girls’ and Nowata all had their season’s come to end in win or go home games in the area consolation bracket.

Pawhuska lost a close battle with No. 12 Hulbert, 56-53. The ninth-ranked Huskies never led in the ballgame but scrapped their way into contention late. Holton Justus led Isaiah Walker to the hoop to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

Walker and Tell Richardson each scored 14 points. Pawhuska ends the season at 14-5.

The No. 18 Oklahoma Union girls’ fell behind big early on and could never recover in a 60-41 loss to Preston. The Lady Cougars fell behind 28-4 early in the second quarter but mounted quite a comeback to make things interesting.

OKU charged out on a 21-4 run lasting almost over 12 minutes in the second and third quarters. Chesnie Hewitt battled foul trouble early on but put together a phenomenal 22 point performance. This putback cut the Preston lead to eight.

The Lady Pirates would finish strong though and put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. OKU finishes the 2020-21 campaign at 14-9.

The final game of the night was thriller as No. 10 Nowata was upset at the buzzer by Chouteau-Mazie. A banked in three at the horn gave the Wildcats a 54-51 win to end Nowata’s season.

The game was tied at 51 with two minutes left. Senior point guard Gabe Velasco would dribble out nearly the whole clock before driving the lane and getting fouled with four seconds left. After a timeout Velasco missed the front end of a one-and-one which set up the winning shot for Chouteau.

Nowata trailed by as many as ten points late in the third quarter. This triple from Jace Thompson gave the Ironmen a fourth quarter lead.

Thompson had 15 points on the night. Mark Price led Nowata with 23 points in his final game with the Ironmen. Nowata ends the year at 12-4.
