Pawhuska's Defense Ahead of Offense

Pawhuska basketball continues to improve as the calendar gets deeper into January. The Huskies are staunch defensively, which is good news for head coach Monty Unruh. There is some bad news, and that is shooting woes.

So far, Pawhuska hasn't had enough players step into big scoring roles. That is something the Huskies will need going forward. Pawhuska had a 1-2 week last week, with a win over Caney Valley (58-39) sandwiched between two losses. The Huskies fell to Newkirk (56-52) and Dewey (60-43). Unruh talks about the Pawhuska week.

Unruh stressed defense over winter break with his club. He feels like the emphasis on defense paid off, but now the shots just aren't falling. Shot selection is one easy way that the Huskies can improve their scoring, and shooting percentage.

Another facet to the offensive problems for Pawhuska is the mental side. Players try to press a little more when shots aren't falling. Trying too hard can be an issue in itself. Unruh wants his guys to relax and let the offense come to them.

Pawhuska is off on Tuesday, but the Huskies have two games at the end of the week, against Pawnee on Thursday and Barnsdall on Friday. Pawnee plays a tough zone, which has Unruh already concerned.

J.R. Young and Trent Barnett are leading the way so far for the Pawhuska offense, but Unruh thinks there are players on the roster capable of giving his team a few more points.
