Remembering The 1970 Nowata State Title

As Nowata looks for its first state title since 1970 on Friday night in Stillwater against Davis, a lot of people's thoughts may turn to the last time the Ironmen took home a Gold Ball.

NHS beat the Lindsay Leopards for the 2A State Title, in a game played at Central State College in Edmond.

We got the chance to speak with Woody Teel, who was a senior offensive and defensive lineman on that Ironmen team, and Teel remembers quite a bit from the championship season.

Nowata actually started the season out slow, losing to Dewey, tying with Collinsville and losing in a shut out to Pawhuska, in the first three games of the season. But Nowata would quickly turn things around, against a now-state power, Tulsa Union.

Nowata would go undefeated from that point on, including avenging a loss to Dewey, NHS beat the Doggers in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

Nowata then beat Salisaw in the semifinals, and then played Lindsay for the State Championship. Teel recalls Linsay's lineup. The Leopards hadn't lost more than three games in the previous two seasons combined, and the Ironmen viewed themselves as an underdog

The game didn't start out well for Nowata, Lindsay struck first and second, leaving the Ironmen trailing 12-0 at halftime

The conditions were wet in Edmond, and Nowata needed a change at halftime, literally.

NHS would strike quickly in the 2nd half, and never look back, eventually beating Lindsay 14-12. The only difference in the game was two PATs that the Leopards missed in the first half.

Teel has continued to live in Nowata, and has always followed Ironmen football closely. He intends on being in Stillwater on Friday night.

Woody also kept the scouting-report copy that was given to him before the game.
