Today in Sports History with some Oklahoma ties… April 7 is the 51st birthday of running back Ricky Watters. Watters is a Super Bowl champion, 10-year NFL veteran and five-time pro-bowler.

Watters was known for his odd high-stepping running style. Chris Berman with ESPN would refer to him as Ricky “running” Watters during highlight replays.

Watters played with San Francisco, Philadelphia and Seattle. His Super Bowl win game in 1994 with the 49ers. He was also a National Champion in 1988 with Notre Dame.

Despite being a Super Bowl champion and a five-time Pro Bowler, Watters is not in the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton. Watters was known for his brash, sometimes loudmouth style – which many believe why he has not been enshrined.

He is usually tops on lists of best players not in the Hall of Fame.

An Oklahoma connection to Watters - He was part of a group of National Football League players who beat movie-stars in a benefit softball game for the Oklahoma City bombing.

Watters was used a relief pitcher, and threw at Joshua Morrow, an actor from the Young and The Restless, during the game. Morrow charged the mound, but was unable to catch the NFL running back.
