Today in Oklahoma sports history… Happy Birthday to one of many Oklahoman Major Leaguers… Charlie O’Brien, a Bishop Kelley Comet and a familiar last name to those that follow Tulsa high school area baseball. He was born on May 1, 1960.

O'Brien grew up in Tulsa and graduated from Bishop Kelley in 1978.

After spurning the Rangers in the 1978 draft, O'Brien played his college baseball for Wichita State, when the Shockers were starting their prominent run.

His senior year in Wichita, O'Brien set school records, hitting 25 home runs with 116 RBIs. WSU made the College World Series Finals in 1982.

The Oakland Athletics drafted O'Brien in the fifth round of the 1982 MLB draft. O'Brien made his MLB debut with the Athletics on June 2, 1985.

He played in the majors for 15 years with eight different teams, winning a world championship in 1995 with Atlanta.

According to baseball-almanac, 266 major leaguers have been born in Oklahoma, which ranks 19th among the 50 states and Washington DC.
