Today in Sports History with some Oklahoma Ties… Happy 61st birthday to Bob Tway, an Oklahoman and former Oklahoma State Cowboy who spent nearly two decades playing on the PGA Tour.

Tway is one of the most successful golfers in the state’s history, as his career earnings have topped more than $14-million.

Tway was born in Oklahoma City and went to high school in Georgia. He was probably just as good of a quarterback as he was a golfer in high school, but a broken arm his sophomore year turned him back to golf, where he stayed.

He was wooed by Mike Holder to return to Oklahoma and attend Oklahoma State for his college career. Tway turned pro in 1981.

In college he was a three-time first-team All-American, the 1979 Big Eight medalist and helped lead the Cowboys to national championships in 1978 and 1980 with a runner-up finish in 1979.

Tway has eight PGA Tour victories, including winning the PGA Championship in 1986. It took him four years to get his tour card and began consistent play in the PGA in 1985. He began playing in the Champions tour in 2009.

Tway now lives in Edmond, his son Kevin was a golfer at Oklahoma State and is still on the PGA Tour today. Kevin and Bob are one of 10 father and son duos to both have a PGA Tour victory.
