Oologah Baseball Opens Season 5–0

Apparently things are going pretty well for Oologah baseball right now. The Mustangs are off to a spotless 5–0 start this season after handling Jay in back-to-back games, winning 8–0 and then following it up with a 13–3 rout the very next day. Early season dominance doesn’t always mean a parade later, but for now Oologah is doing exactly what good teams are supposed to do, beat the teams in front of them, and beat them comfortably.

Head coach Layle DeVilbiss says the group is simply playing good baseball at the moment, though he’s already looking ahead instead of polishing the undefeated record. “Guys are playing well right now,” DeVilbiss said. “Looking forward to getting better and competing against Sequoyah.” Translation: the 5–0 start is nice, but nobody in the dugout is hanging a banner for mid-March.

A big reason for the hot start has been Jett Griswold, who has been lights-out on the mound so far this season. Griswold has thrown two complete games and racked up 17 strikeouts, giving Oologah a reliable arm every time he takes the ball. The Mustangs will try to keep the momentum rolling today when they face Claremore-Sequoyah to open play in the Sperry Invitational. Early tests are great, now we’ll see if the perfect record travels.
