Washington County District 1 Commissioner Mitch Antle says the county is addressing public concerns about roadside herbicide use, including safety and environmental standards.

In a statement, Antle said the district uses an Integrated Vegetation Management Plan combining mechanical methods with selective herbicide applications to control growth at intersections, bridges and along roadways where vegetation can limit visibility and affect drainage.

He said the goal is to improve driver safety while maintaining necessary vegetation. Antle says some residents have raised concerns about impacts on wildlife and the environment.

The herbicides target invasive and noxious weeds and are approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Applications follow state and federal guidelines, with records kept to ensure compliance and minimize environmental impact.

County practices align with those of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, Antle says.

Residents maintaining right of way near their property may request a “No Application” zone through a county form.

Antle says tall vegetation at intersections is a frequent complaint and poses safety risks. The herbicide use helps reduce accidents and allows crews to focus on road repairs and infrastructure.

Officials encouraged residents to contact the District 1 or commissioners’ office with questions.
