The Bartlesville City Council voted Monday to eliminate late fees for overdue library materials.

Under the new fine-free policy, library patrons will no longer be charged overdue fines on borrowed materials. The library will also forgive existing late fees, provided borrowers return any overdue items.

Bartlesville Public Library Director Kiley Roberson says the policy change is in line with other libraries across the state who have re-examined overdue fines.

She says she hopes community members take advantage of the change, increasing access to services without unnecessary barriers.

Roberson says eliminating late fees is expected to encourage former patrons to return to the library. She says borrowers are still responsible for returning materials so they remain available for others.

While overdue fines have been eliminated, Roberson says patrons will continue to be responsible for the cost of lost or damaged items.
