Caney Looks to Carry Momentum into District Showdown with Riverton

The Caney Bullpups are gearing up for a key district matchup against Riverton this Friday, riding high after a 48–6 win over Galena. Despite the convincing score, Head Coach Chris Davis says his team has some cleanup to do before facing a fellow 3–0 district opponent.
“My talk after the game was that two things needed to change,” Davis said. “We’ve got to come ready to play every game and take care of the football. And number two, we have to take care of penalties. The competition only gets tougher from here.”
Davis credited his offensive line and backfield trio, running backs Bunkley and Garden, and fullback Boone White, for the team’s offensive success. The two primary backs have combined for over 1,600 yards this season, with Davis calling them “1A and 1B” options in a balanced attack.
“Boone White has made a big difference,” Davis said. “He’s blowing holes open in that line and giving those guys a real shot to break the big one.”
The Bullpups’ depth and youth have also been key factors. With only two seniors on the roster, underclassmen like Benton Spielman and Sam Benton have stepped into major defensive roles. Davis praised the team’s “next man up” mentality, saying it keeps competition sharp and energy high.
“This year we’re setting the table,” Davis said. “We want to make a good playoff run now so that when we come back next year, we’re even stronger. But I told the guys, I don’t want to wait until next year. Let’s go now.”
Caney’s matchup with Riverton will determine the top spot in the district, and Davis expects another hard-fought contest.
“Riverton’s a young team too,” he said. “They’ve got a good one-two punch in the backfield and have been coming on strong at the end of the season. We’re going to have to bring our A-game.”
The Bullpups and Rams will face off Friday night in Riverton in what could be a preview of postseason battles to come.
