The Caney Valley Bullpups punched their ticket to the sectional round of the Class 2A state playoffs Friday night, rallying from a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat the Riverton Rams, 48-28, at Caney Memorial Stadium.
Caney Valley trailed 28-16 at the break but erupted for 32 unanswered points in the second half to secure the regional championship and extend their winning streak to six games. The victory improved the Bullpups’ record to 9-1, while Riverton ended its season at 5-5.
The night started rough for Caney Valley as Riverton jumped ahead early with a 70-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. After a blocked punt recovered in the end zone, the Rams led 21-8 after the first quarter and looked poised to widen the margin before halftime. However, a fumble at the Caney 2-yard line late in the half swung momentum back to the Bullpups.
The second half was all Caney Valley. The Bullpups scored quickly after the break and took their first lead on a 5-yard touchdown run by Traxcyn Garton in the third quarter. Long runs by Jace Buckley and Boone White helped stretch the advantage, but the dagger came late in the fourth when Angel Martinez scooped up a fumble and raced 89 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory.
With the win, Caney Valley advances to face another 9-1 squad, Osage City, in the sectional round. The Indians dominated Atchison County, 60-7, on Friday night. The matchup is set for this Friday at Caney Valley High School Stadium, with a berth in the Class 2A quarterfinals on the line.
