Mustangs Sweep Vinita

Oologah-Talala’s boys and girls basketball teams took care of business Tuesday night against Vinita, because apparently defense and ball movement still work in February. The Mustangs pulled away for a 62–46 win in the boys game, leaning on unselfish play and steady execution against a Vinita squad that never makes anything easy. Head coach Caleb Branscum said his team did what it was supposed to do, share the basketball, take care of it, and not panic when Vinita turned up the defensive pressure.

“We played together well last night,” Branscum said. “We were sharing the basketball and doing the right things. Vinita is always a tough opponent for us, always being so defensively sound, but I was proud of our guys for handling the basketball and moving the ball.” Translation: no hero ball, no unnecessary turnovers, and no handing momentum to the other team for free.

The Lady Mustangs made it even more straightforward, rolling past Vinita 61–35 and removing any drama early. Both Oologah-Talala teams now turn their attention to Verdigris, another familiar headache on the schedule. “Verdigris is another one that’s always tough,” Branscum said. “We will have to play well defensively and play together on offense. We like playing at home and hopefully we can play well enough to get the job done.” The Mustangs and Lady Mustangs will get that home-court advantage tonight, with both games set to tip off in Oologah, where the goal is simple: do it again, and don’t overthink it.
