The Caney Valley Lady Trojans Didn’t Need Style Points, Just A Trophy

Playing on their home floor Friday afternoon, the Lady Trojans claimed the championship of the 33rd Annual Caney Valley Basketball Tournament with a 41-34 win over the Dewey Lady Bulldoggers. The title game was moved up to 4 p.m. to get teams on the road ahead of a winter storm expected to move through the area later Friday night.

Offense was optional early. Caney Valley led just 19-10 at halftime after a sluggish first half that featured more missed shots than highlights. That changed after the break.

Presley Smith made sure of it.

Smith poured in 26 of Caney Valley’s 41 points, nearly single-handedly jump-starting the Lady Trojans in the second half. Dewey responded late in the fourth quarter, using a full-court press to steal points and cut the deficit to four, briefly making things uncomfortable for the home crowd.

That was as close as it got.

Missed shots and late fouls by Dewey sealed the outcome, sending Caney Valley to the championship and keeping the hardware at home.

The title marks the Lady Trojans’ first championship in the Caney Valley Basketball Tournament since 2024, also against Dewey.
