OKM Interns Gain Real-World Experience at Oklahoma's Premiere Music Festival

The future of music, marketing and event planning is in pretty good hands, thanks to a group of passionate Oklahoma interns working behind the scenes at this year’s OKM Music Festival.
Appearing on COMMUNITY CONNECTION, Luke Olsen, a recent Bartlesville High School graduate and double bassist headed to Oklahoma State University, joined fellow OSU students Luke Rogers, a music industry major, and Bella Pham, a marketing and strategic communications student, shared what they have learned about bringing OKM’s events to life.
“This week has been busy but rewarding,” said Olsen. “We’ve done everything from setting up sound systems to promoting events at SunFest. I even ran sound for our Twinkle Big Stars kids’ concert.”
Especially for Kids, OKM’s family-friendly program, has been a big hit, with puppet shows, story time, and themed parties like a Frozen-style tea at St. Luke’s Church. Many events are free but require an RSVP through OKMmusic.org.
Bella Pham says it’s been eye-opening: “I’ve done lots of graphic design, but also had to market face-to-face—talking to people on the spot at SunFest was humbling and definitely a confidence builder.”
The interns are also helping with OKM’s headline events, including concerts featuring jazz saxophonist Grady Nichols and classical groups like the Escher Quartet and Manhattan Chamber Players.
“There’s world-class talent coming to Woolaroc and Tulsa,” said Rogers. “These musicians are Juilliard- and Curtis-trained—and we’re learning from the best.”
Showcase events are also planned throughout the week with free daytime performances by local artists like pianist Wade Daniels and the OKM Youth Keyboard Orchestra. The festival finale at The Refinery is a 21-and-up evening event, complete with complimentary wine and a performance by Brent Giddens as Elvis.
