Mustangs Push Ahead to Regionals

The postseason has arrived, and the Oologah-Talala Mustangs are grinding their way through it. The Mustangs fell to Miami 78-56 in Saturday’s Class 4A district contest, the third meeting between the two teams this season. Head coach Caleb Branscum said the series has been competitive throughout the year, including a narrow 51-50 loss earlier in the season that came down to the final possession. This latest matchup, however, saw Miami pull away as the Mustangs continue adjusting to changes in their lineup at the worst possible time of year.

Oologah-Talala has been without its starting post player, who averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game before suffering a torn ACL. Since that injury, the Mustangs have been working to patch together production that simply is not easy to replace. Branscum acknowledged the challenge but made it clear the effort has not dipped. The team remains bought in, competing hard despite a difficult closing stretch to the regular season and district play.

Now the focus shifts to regionals. The Mustangs will face Wagoner on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln Christian. Wagner enters with a 2-22 record, but as Branscum noted, the playoffs have a way of ignoring regular-season resumes. With film study underway and several common opponents between the two teams, Oologah-Talala prepares for a clean-slate opportunity to extend its season Thursday night. You can listen to the interview with Coach Branscum HERE.
