House Sends Teacher Salary Schedule Bill to Senate

The Oklahoma House voted unanimously on House Bill 1780 Thursday that would give teachers a $1,200 pay raise. District 11 House Representative Darrell Fincher adds that House Bill 1780 is more than just a teacher pay raise. He says the bill lists the entire salary schedule so they passed a bill that would improve the entire salary for that as well. There will be more money do the line but they don't know how much yet. Fincher says this is a multi-year project to properly fund Oklahoma schools.
The $1,200 pay hike would cost the state a little more than $70 million annualy, which includes expected costs for retirement, Medicare and Social Security benefits. The pay boost is an addition to an average annual raise of $6,100 that teachers received last year from lawmakers who tried to avert a statewide teacher walkout that happened anyway.
The measure now heads to the Oklahoma Senate where it's expected to pass and be sent to Gov. Kevin Stitt, who is expected to sign it into law.
