Bartlesville Sees Uptick in Sales Tax Revenue

News sales tax figures released this week for November show the City of Bartlesville’s revenues are up 5 percent from this time last year and $70,000 up over the prior year’s collection at this time, according City Clerk Jason Muninger.

The news gets better. Muninger says, ”The city is up over $240,000 over budget anticipation.”

Muninger and City Manager Mike Bailey agree the key to the rise in the revenues is that “people are shopping locally.”

Bailey says one source of revenue related to local sales that Bartlesville misses out on is internet taxes for online sales. He explains that taxes from sales over the internet are deemed “use taxes” and that Bartlesville—for reasons of local development—does not assess use taxes.

Bartlesville Man Found with Heroin, Methamphetamine

A Bartlesville man was arrested after being found asleep in his vehicle with heroin and methamphetamine in his possession. Christian Bailey has made court appearances on both Monday and Tuesday this week. Bailey was released from jail after posting a $1,000 bond after a Sunday afternoon arrest. However, a motion was brought forward to raise Bailey’s bond to $25,000 and he was remanded back into the custody of the jail.

According to an affidavit, officers found Bailey asleep in a parked car at the Rolling Meadows apartment complex in Bartlesville. Officers advised him to exit the vehicle. His steps were very lethargic and his speech pattern was slow. Bailey failed every field sobriety test that was administered. Officers searched his vehicle and found needles, cotton swabs and a burnt spoon. The paraphernalia tested positive for traces of heroin and methamphetamine.

Bailey also has pending cases out Payne, Pawnee and Tulsa County’s.

Rep. Hern Welcomes USMCA Agreement House Vote

After more than a year of inaction, the House of Representatives has announced an agreement on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement to be voted on in the House.

This deal will replace NAFTA as the document governing trade between all North American neighbors. Rep. Hern joined fellow members of the USMCA Whip Team on a call with Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, the United States Trade Representative, to discuss the agreements made between USTR and Speaker Nancy Pelosi before the vote was announced.

“It’s been a long time coming, but I am glad to finally announce that we are moving forward with the USMCA,” said Rep. Hern. “This is a tremendous step in our relationship with our North American neighbors. The world has changed so much since the creation of NAFTA – e-commerce wasn’t even mentioned! A modern world demands modern updates. It’s a year later than we’d hoped, but I am proud of the work we’ve done to find consensus on the USMCA and bring it to the floor for a vote.”
