Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bartlesville is looking for mentors to serve youth in our local community. Area Director Charlene Dew expresses Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bartlesville's need for mentors. She said Tuesday that they need 34 people to who can come in and mentor a child one-on-one.

According to Dew, some children have been on a waiting list for almost a year if not longer. Dew said a child's whole life can change in a year. She said they have a need to get boys off the list by matching them with a mentor. If everyone called wanting to become a mentor, Dew said Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bartlesville would answer in a heartbeat.

Dew said mentors are especially need in their school based program. She said mentors that mentor children in the school based program will be at the child's school from 3:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon.

The school based programs are perfect for people who work nights, who have flexible day shifts or are retirees, Dew said. She added that while the activities are limited at the school (you would not be fishing or baking cookies), it still creates a good opportunity for you to mentor a child and make a difference in their life.

Dew says that they ask their mentors to serve for a year unless they become an on-site mentor at a local school. Dew says if you are interested in becoming a mentor, you will have to fill out an application. She says they also do background checks on all their mentors. Lastly, she says they will ask you to come into their offices for an extensive interview.
