Local Team Highlights Hewitt Tournament Finals

The championship games at the Ty Hewitt Memorial Tournament will have a local flair on Saturday night. No. 17 Nowata and No. 4 Oklahoma Union square off for the boy’s title at 8:30 p.m. and Oklahoma Union and Mannford will play for the girl’s championship at 7 p.m.
The two Nowata County rivals share a great degree of familiarity. Nowata head coach Gary Hollingshead is the father of two of the Cougars best players—Kade and Jace Hollingshead. The Ironmen coach talks about competing against his two boys.
On the court Nowata has been potent. The Ironmen have notched 24 three’s in the first two rounds of the tournament. This will be Nowata’s first title game appearance in this event since 2017 and they have not won it since 2016.
Oklahoma Union has not missed a beat this season. The Cougars are 4-0 and haven’t had any trouble getting to the title game. Jace Hollingshead is averaging close to 20 points per game this season. Nate Collier and Dillon Ellis have been key contributors as well. Head coach Lee Ott talks about what the Cougars have done well this year.
OKU has appeared in the last three title games in this event and are the reigning champions.
The Lady Cougars will have a chance for a championship as well. This is the sixth consecutive season they have reached the title game. However, the Lady Cougars are just 1-4 in those games. The only victory came over Mannford in 2018.
Radio coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on KRIG 104.9 FM.
