Dropout reports and a college remediation report were presented during the Dewey Public Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday evening.

Dewey High School Principal Brent Dugger reported seven dropouts from last school year. Dugger said the number was a little high for them over the course of five years, but noted the number wasn't abnormal. He said they had students come to them from all over the country and he had feared that the number would be higher.

Dugger said he thought their dropout numbers would be at 15 or higher. He said he thought they did a great job to capture those kids that were really at-risk starting last school year in a COVID world.

Comparing this last year to years gone by, Dewey High School saw five students drop out in 2017. 10 students dropped out at DHS in 2018. In 2019, there were three dropouts. And in 2020, there were five dropouts. Again, the 2021 dropout number came in at seven.

Dewey Middle School saw one dropout last year. Principal Brent Massey said the student was enrolled in online courses. Massey said they had to drop the student for non-attendance despite efforts to get the child engaged in his coursework. He said they have since enrolled that student in courses on campus for the current school year.

Looking at the college remediation report, Dugger said the data is always misleading because it is two years behind. Dugger said three of fifteen students were in English college remedial courses. He said three students were in remedial courses in math and two students were involved in these courses in reading. Four total students of the fifteen received some level of remedial courses in the fall of 2019.
