The Nowata County Commissioners heard a presentation from Nowata City Manager Melania Collins at Monday morning’s meeting. Collins was requesting assistance from the county in purchasing a new ambulance for Nowata EMS.

Currently, the ambulance service has two vehicles—one of which is 20 years old and has a litany of issues. The service is required to have two ambulances that are functional or it will be forced to shut down. Nowata EMS Director Nancy Brooks explains the seriousness of the situation.

The city put forward a request for the board to for the 33% of cost for a new vehicle, which would be roughly $96,000. The commissioners suggested that city use its American Rescue Plan Act funds but those have already been allocated for the water tower project.

The board expressed interest in wanting to find a way to help but they also acknowledged needing to be loyal to all constituents of the county and not just city residents.
