With the recent heat wave the Nowata County Commissioners expressed interest in declaring a burn ban in the county until further notice. This is something that is often implemented at the state level but local authorities have the power to issue a resolution for their jurisdictions as well.

The City of Nowata has already issued a burn ban. The city posted to its Facebook page saying, “The City of Nowata will not be allowing any kind of outside burning in the city limits.”

There has been 40 days without any measurable rain in the county. Nowata County emergency manager Laurie Summers talks about the drought situation.

The commissioners opted to get a resolution put on next Monday’s agenda. All outdoor burning in the county is discouraged until the resolution is put in place.
