Bartlesville Drops Game One to Sand Springs

Bartlesville High baseball dropped game one of a two-game District set with Sand Springs on Monday night at Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium.

Amidst a cold front and high winds moving into the area, the Sandites pulled away for a 6-1 victory.

BHS again got a good start on the mound from Barrett Merciez, who kept the Bruins in the game in the late innings.

It was 2-0 Sand Springs until the Sandites tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh off two base hits and two Bruin errors.

Merciez got out of a few jams. After leadoff runners were on five of the first seven frames, he was able to work out of trouble.

This strikeout completed a three-up three-down inning for the sophomore starter.

Merciez ended up going 6.2 allowing only five hits, five runs, three earned with five strikeouts and three walks.

Bartlesville ran into one of the toughest pitchers in the state offensively. A tall right hander in Eli Buxton for Sand Springs went six strong innings. He struck out 12. Buxton has signed to play at Arizona State University in the fall.

BHS scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh off a wild pitch.

The two hits for Bartlesville came from Brenden Asher and Sam Marcella. BHS drops to 1-4 in District play and 6-8 overall. Bruins return the favor at Sand Springs on Tuesdy night for a 6:00 first pitch.
